Xavier.
A robot, commanded over the web, that navigates corridors and tells bad jokes. This is research? It is (well, except for the
knock-knock jokes), when the goal of the research is to develop autonomous mobile robots that can operate reliably over
extended periods of time, and can learn and adapt to their environments.
You can command Xavier anytime, and see your commands carried out live when it is online, which is usually weekdays 2-4pm
EST (19:00-21:00 GMT).
These are the goals of the Xavier project, sponsored by ARPA and the Robotics Institute of CMU. Xavier is built on top of a 24
inch diameter, four-wheeled, synchro-drive base, built by Real-World Interfaces....

Telegarden.
This tele-robotic installation allows WWW users to view and interact with a remote garden filled with living plants. Members can
plant, water, and monitor the progress of seedlings via the tender movements of an industrial robot arm. Internet behavior might
be characterized as ``hunting and gathering''; our purpose is to consider the ``post-nomadic'' community, where survival favors
those who work together.
The Telegarden was developed at the University of Southern California and went online in June 1995.
In September 1996, the Telegarden was moved to the new Ars
Electronica Center in Austria (Linz) where it will be on display for one year. |

Bradford Robotic Telescope Observatory site.
The first of its kind in the world. The telescope is 46cm and totally autonomous. Located high on the moors in West
Yorkshire, England. The telescope decides when the conditions are good enough to make observations of the sky by
itself (an astronomer does not need to be present).
Anyone on the Internet can register and ask the telescope to look at anything in the northern night sky.
Other data (weather information and reports) are obtained and updated on this site automatically every day.
