Accident de la BMW V12 LMR numéro 17 :
Dimanche juste avant midi, la BMW V12 LMR numéro 17 a dû abandonner suite à un accident. A cet instant, la voiture était pilotée par JJ Lehto. Le trio Tom Kristensen/JJ Lehto/Jörg Müller avait été au commandement des 24 Heures du Mans pendant 18 heures et demie. Le Finlandais souffre d'une coupure au genou droit soigné par les médecins du Centre médical. La cause de l'accident a été d'ordre technique : un élément de stabilisateur s'etait détaché et avait poussé sur la tringlerie de commande des gaz sans intervention du pilote. Lehto n'avait aucune chance de couper le moteur assez rapidement pour échapper ainsi à l'accident.

BMW V12 LMR accident, car no. 17 :
The BMW V12 LMR number 17 retired shortly before noon in the wake of an accident. JJ Lehto was at the wheel at the time of the crash. Tom Kristensen/JJ Lehto/Jörg Müller had led the 24 hour race for 18 and-a-half hours. The Finn suffered cuts to his right knee, which was looked after in the medical centre. The cause of the accident was a technical defect : a roll-bar link came loose and pushed against the throttle linkage, with no influence from the driver himself. Lehto did not have a chance of stopping the engine in time, in order to prevent the crash.

Unfall BMW V12 LMR, Startnummer 17 :
Kurz vor 12 Uhr am Sonntag mittag fiel der BMW V12 LMR mit der Startnummer 17 nach einem Unfall aus, zu diesem Zeitpunkt pilotiert von JJ Lehto. Das Trio Tom Kristensen/JJ Lehto/Jörg Müller hatte seit achtzehneinhalb Stunden das 24-Stunden-Rennen angeführt. Der Finne zog sich eine Schnittwunde am rechten Knie zu, die im Medical Center versorgt wurde. Unfallursache war ein technischer Defekt : Ein Stabilisatorteil hatte sich gelost und ohne FahrereinfluB auf das Gasgestange gedruckt. Lehto hatte keine Chance, den Motor schnell genug abzustellen, um den Unfall zu verhindern.
